2007 National AgrAbility Workshop

Sacramento, California
October 29 - November 1, 2007

Purpose: Each year, the National AgrAbility Project, in partnership with a State AgrAbility Project, hosts a four-day educational and training workshop intended to provide technical assistance and resources to professionals interacting with individuals and their families who farm or ranch despite a disability.

Workshop participants are offered a wide array of sessions to increase their knowledge of strategies the farmer, rancher and farmworker use to continue working in production agriculture.

The 2007 workshop sessions will provide participants with information related to:

  • Trends in disability and rehabilitation,
  • Applications of assistive technology to the agricultural setting,
  • Service strategies to meet a variety of needs of farmers with disabilities, and
  • Resources for outreach, marketing and funding AgrAbility projects.

Safety and Standards Considerations When Modifying Machinery Controls

Farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers with disabilities can often continue in their chosen professions with appropriate assistive technologies, such as modifications to equipment and its controls, to improve individuals' independence, productivity, and profitability while demonstrating positive cost-benefit ratio. Rehabilitation professionals and engineers providing services to those individuals should understand relevant design standards and regulations in order to develop systems that perform as expected and with minimal risk of failure and resultant injury, property damage, and liability claims.

Development of a successful three-way partnership of providing AT services to farmers with disabilities.

AgrAbility of Wisconsin will discuss a successful partnership between Easter Seals Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin-Extension and Wisconsin Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) that developed over a fifteen year period.

Secondary Injuries and Farming with an Amputation or Spinal Cord Injury
Dr. Willkomm will provide an overview of the secondary injuries experienced by farmers with an upper or lower extremity amputation or a spinal cord injury.  In addition, this session will share recommendations made by farmers to reduce or prevent injuries.  This session will also share ideas from farmers for new improvements made to prosthetic devices or wheelchairs.

Moving from Patient to Person

Telling a person with pain to live with “it” sounds like an impossible task.  Providing them with the necessary skills can allow them to move from the mindset of a patient to that of a person taking an active role in the recovery process.  During this workshop we will explore how to empower the person in pain and discuss the skills needed to help improve quality of life for both themselves and their family members.

An Occupational Therapist's Perspective on Assisting Farmers to Enhance their Everyday Occupational Performance secondary to Injury or Disease.

This session will focus on the philosophy and application of the occupational therapy practice model termed Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP). It will provide an alternative option to conducting on-farm evaluation and intervention for professionals involved with AgrAbility.

Wheelchairs and Farming.

Farming from a wheelchair presents a number of challenges. Learn how advances in new wheelchair designs may enable the farmer to maneuver on rough terrain and perform labor intensive tasks.  Vendors from Standing Wheelchair Company, The Renegade Chair, Sunrise Medical/Quickie, Invacare, Life Essentials E- Motion Power Assist Rims and I-Bot will discuss advances in shock absorption, benefits of standing chairs, advances in seating systems, new materials that make chairs more durable and lighter, advances in wheelchair propulsion, and advances in power chairs.  In addition, participants will see how these chairs perform outside in an obstacle course.

DVD #1
This first DVD is approximately 1 hour and captures the presentations of the seven wheelchairs that were discussed and demonstrated during the session titled, Wheelchairs and Farming. These wheelchairs include: the four all terrain chair by Otto Bock, Renegade Chair, Life Essentials, and the IBOT from Independent Mobility as well as indoor and outdoor chairs from Permobile and Sunrise Medical.

DVD #2
A second DVD is approximately 35 minutes and captures outdoor demonstrations of these chairs. These demonstrations include the IBOT chair climbing up and down stairs, the Life Essentials chair pulling a U-Haul trailer, and a chairs demonstrating what they can do over speed bumps, uneven cross slopes, roots, rock, grass, gravel, curbs, and steep inclines. The video also includes Hubert Von Holton, From Life Essentials demonstrating his latest lifts.

Organic Farming with a Disability

Andy and Hilda Byrd have been farming, mostly organic, for over 7 years, despite a spinal cord injury Andy sustained in 1980. Learn how they market their produce, operate small farm equipment and made innovative adaptations to their operation.   Andy and Hilda are active participants in Georgia AgrAbility where Hilda also works as a Peer Coordinator.

What's Growin' On:  Agricultural Public Policy for the 21st Century:

AgrAbility has an important message that needs to be heard, but how can we effectively communicate this message so that people hear? Public policy is not just about what you say but also how you say it.  In this session you will learn and brainstorm realistic and practical strategies for getting AgrAbility out to the media making use of both agricultural and non-agricultural outlets, government, and other groups to increase awareness of your message and programs.

Individuals must guarantee their room to a credit card or by advance deposit. The Doubletree Hotel Sacramento requires a first night deposit, refundable up to 48 hours in advance of the conference date. Credit cards used for confirmation will be charged immediately. The hotel also charges an early departure fee of $50.00. If your travel plans change, please be sure to contact the hotel immediately and confirm your changes at check-in.

Single or double occupancy: $119.00 plus a local tax of 12.10% and a Tourism Assessment Fee for $1.25 per room per night.
